A+A-

Blood sugar monitoring by flash testing device freestyle libre- reduces diabetes complications including episodes of hypoglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis. According to a new UK audit report, FreeStyle Libre, a flash blood sugar monitoring system reduced incidences of low blood sugar in roughly 80% of people with continuous glucose monitors, CGM.
The FreeStyle Libre is more affordable than continuous glucose monitors(CGM) and it provides ‘flash glucose monitoring’ with glucose readings provided by scanning a sensor rather than pricking the finger.

The Association of British Clinical Diabetologists carried out an audit into the flash glucose monitoring system and found a significant improvement in diabetes control measured by HbA1c, especially in people who had higher blood sugar levels before using the Libre. The results were published at the American Diabetes Association’s 79th Scientific Session earlier this month.
Blood sugar monitoring is an integral part of Diabetes management. The conventional methods of testing and monitoring at times dissuade a patient because of the nature of the disease being chronic and therefore requiring frequent testing at intervals. The convenience in usage increases the compliance as has been found in the new monitoring system.
During the study, the researchers collected data from 4,709 people with type 1 diabetes and followed up on 1,299 of this group, comparing health data in the year before initiation of the FreeStyle Libre with the results six months on from using the device.

A total of 79% participants said time in hypoglycemia went down with the use of the device, while 31% said the frequency of hypoglycemias was reduced and 39% had less nocturnal hypoglycemias.

Additionally, 9% of the participants reported a reversal of hypoglycemia unawareness, and there was a significant improvement in the gold score, which is a measurement of awareness of blood sugar levels falling. There was also a major improvement in the Diabetes Distress Score, a diabetes-related emotional score.

The study also found a reduction in Hospital admissions for hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The researchers feel that a one-year follow up is required to confirm this set of findings.
The experts feel that by using the device an increased number of those with type 1 diabetes are more likely to successfully achieve glycaemic control and avoid diabetes-related complications in the longer term.”The Libre, developed by Abbott, will soon be available freely for the end users.

This product is available from a long time. Problem is there is no software support via a mobile phone to scan the readings and we have to separately buy the scanner which is just a nfc enabled device. So we have to keep visiting the doctors to monitor. Biggest drawback.
So a maximum times you read is approximately two to three times in the 14 day period.

Smorgasbord Letters from America 1985 – 1986 – March 1986 – Pool Parties, lost puppies, New Furniture.
Posted by Smorgasbord – Variety is the Spice of Life.

It is March 1986 and we are still exploring the options for us to stay in the United States when our contract ends in January 1987. The letters are now more or less in sync with the same dates 33 years ago.

March 18th 1986

Dear M & D.

Another St. Patrick’s Day over, we must have been the only two in Houston who didn’t attend the parade and celebrate it!  I hear they even turned the river flowing through San Antonio that we walked along with you last year, green. One of our friends who comes from New York said that around 40 million Americans have Irish ancestry…for a small country Ireland has managed to do what greater nations have failed to… infiltrate every continent. There were a contingent of Irish at the Alamo on both sides as there are some Mexican families with Irish surnames..

We are still looking at options should be stay here after David’s contract finishes in January 1987. The sticking point is still for me to get a visa because we would both have to work if we are to afford a house etc. David is still in talks with agencies and we have had an idea of what I might do…With my previous job with Savills in Norfolk, I am looking at what is needed to take the Real Estate exams here. Once we have an idea of which state we would like to live in, I will check that out. I would be interested to go through the course anyway to keep my brain active.

On the subject of houses, we have come up with a plan to save quite a bit of money. We currently pay rental for all the furniture in the apartment. We get a certain allowance from the company but that does not cover all the rental or the furniture. So I have been to a rental company that also sells used furniture to complexes who offer fully-furnished. We pay 200 dollars a month for the furniture and I have paid 500 dollars for everything needed to replace it. With 9 months left this means a saving of 1300 dollars that we can put towards our new home.. here or back in the UK. David’s company has confirmed that it will bring back all our belongings including my car and any furniture so either way we will get good use from it. We sold our house in Tring with a lot of the furniture included because we didn’t want to pay a lot of storage whilst we were away. So it will be useful. It is all high quality stuff and a fraction of the cost of buying brand new.

Sonia rang me so we could talk about Emma’s visit in the summer and we are looking at June for three weeks. We just need to confirm our whereabouts but she doesn’t have to book the flight until 21 days before. It will be lovely to see her and cannot believe she is now 15… Debby and I have some trips up our sleeves including a girl’s weekend to San Padre Island which is fabulous. We will rent a beach house for three days.

David has a lot of travel planned for the next three weeks with trips to Las Vegas and San Diego in the first week in April. I will send him off with ten dollars to put in the poker slot machines for me… but don’t expect to see any winnings back! And I will fly out to meet him in San Diego for the weekend as we have some air miles to redeem and I can get a bonus ticket for 50 dollars extra. I do love that west coast and we are looking forward to exploring the southern end of the highway.

Walter has a bunch of friends coming in next week for a few days and I am cleaning his carpet for him with a rented machine from the store. I don’t mind as he is very good about making sure we are okay. We are having two of his friends stay with us, there is a big party planned for their first night around the pool with a BBQ and water volleyball and another on the Sunday at his place. I don’t think there will be much time for sleep.

I am now playing water volley ball for the boys team… I am tall and having played netball am quite useful by the net. We sometimes play other apartment complex and I am not sure if I am the mascot or the ace up their sleeves…

We nearly got a dog…..yesterday I found a small puppy wandering around Kroger’s car park and I saw it nearly go under the wheels of a truck. I managed to coax it towards me and picked her up and brought her home. I rang the SPCA but they couldn’t take her last night so we decided to keep her or at least find her a good home.  I took her for a walk around the outside of the apartment complex which has some grass, and as we passed the family section some children ran up and called her name. Seems like she had got out of the window left open for her in the truck when they were shopping at Kroger’s so it had a happy ending. But both of us were a bit disappointed.

Anyway.. time to head over and clean a carpet… and get the guest bedroom ready for the visitors. Write again next week..

love from us both S&D…

No I didn’t I could not start until I had a visa to work, and for that David had to get his job first and his company offered him the job of chief engineer back in the UK.. but I must say, if I had my time again I would have made flipping houses into a business instead of doing it as our main residence. I love the process especially on the smaller homes.. Anyway.. life took a different path..♥♥

So pleased you were able to reunite the puppy with his family, although I know you would have given him a great home. Not surprising my next book has a homeless puppy in it! Buying the used furniture was a wise idea. Look forward to hearing more, especially about the trip to San Diago, my favourite US city.

European Space Agency probe to intercept a comet

The European Space Agency is to launch another mission to a comet.

After the hugely successful Rosetta encounter with the icy dirt-ball known as 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014, officials have now selected a new venture that will launch in 2028.

It’s called Comet Interceptor and will aim to catch and study an object that has come in towards the Sun from the outer reaches of the Solar System.

Scientifically, it will be led from the UK’s Mullard Space Science Laboratory.

Dr Geraint Jones, who is affiliated to the University College London research centre, is the principal investigator.

The concept is a three-in-one probe: a mothership and two smaller daughter craft. They will separate near the comet to conduct different but complementary studies.

The cost for Esa is expected to be about €150m. As is customary, individual member states will provide the instrumentation and cover that tab.

Interceptor was selected on Wednesday by the agency’s Science Programme Committee as part of the new F-Class series – “F” standing for fast. The call for ideas only went out a year ago.

There will now be a period of feasibility assessment with industry before the committee reconvenes to formally “adopt” the concept. At that point, the mission becomes the real dea
The intention is to launch the probe on the same rocket as Esa’s Ariel space telescope when it goes up at the end of the next decade. This observatory won’t use the full performance of its launch vehicle, and so spare mass and volume is available to do something additional.

And it’s Ariel’s destination that makes Interceptor a compelling prospect.

The telescope is to be positioned at a “gravitational sweetspot” about 1.5 million km from Earth. This is an ideal position from which to study distant stars and their planets – but it also represents a fast-response “parking bay” for any new mission seeking a target of opportunity.

Image copyright ESA/STFC RAL SPACE/UCL/EUROPLANET-SCIENCE OFFICE
Image caption Artwork: The Ariel space telescope will study planets around other stars
The type of comets being sought by Interceptor tend to give little notice of their arrival in the inner Solar System – perhaps only a few months.

That’s insufficient time to plan, build and launch a spacecraft. You need to be out there already, waiting for the call.

This is what Interceptor will do. It will be sitting at the sweetspot, relying on sky surveys to find it a suitable target. When that object is identified, the probe will then set off to meet it.

The encounter will be very different from that of Rosetta at 67P. Interceptor will not orbit the comet; it will just fly past – hopefully not to quickly.

Nor will Interceptor try to repeat the landing of Rosetta’s little robot, Philae.

Instead, it will be the job of those daughter craft to see if they can get in a bit closer to the comet than the mothership to acquire some more detailed information.

“The main spacecraft has the propulsion, the high-gain antenna to talk to Earth, and some instrumentation on it. That passes relatively far from the comet, about 1,000km or so upstream of the nucleus of the object. And then we deploy two cubesat-like probes that go a lot closer and do the high-risk, high-reward observations,” deputy PI Dr Colin Snodgrass, from the University of Edinburgh, told BBC News.

Image copyright LSST
Image caption Artwork: The forthcoming LSST will look for potential targets
The comets actively encountered so far by space probes have been the repeat visitors – the ones that shuffle back and forth to make a journey around the Sun every few years.

And because they have gone close to our star on multiple occasions, they’ve been chemically altered by heat, particle bombardment and even numerous impacts with other bodies.

In contrast, the comets that come in from the so-called Oort Cloud – a band of icy material that resides several hundred billion km from the Sun – will be pristine. And to see one at close quarters should give scientists completely new insights into the conditions that existed at the inception of the Solar System, and potentially from even further back in time.

The risk for Interceptor is that it could be parked up for a quite some time. The Oort Cloud comet will have to have just the right trajectory for the Esa mission. A good sample of candidates will inevitably be out of range of the probe’s propulsion system.

On the positive side, new Earth-based observatories, such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), will soon come online. These are expected to have the sensitivity to find many more objects moving across the sky.

“Yes, there’s a risk we could end up sitting there with nothing really suitable,” conceded Prof Mark McCaughrean, Esa’s senior advisor for science and exploration. “But in the end you’d direct it at something and there are some back-up targets already identified.”

These would be more of those “short period” comets. One is called 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann, which was a possibility considered for Europe’s Giotto probe in the 1980s. Giotto eventually flew past Comet Halley.

The 2028 launch is going to be quite an occasion for UK scientists. They will be leading their European partners on both the missions – Ariel and Comet Interceptor – mated atop the rocket.

Chris Lee, the head of science programmes at UK Space Agency, said: “I’m delighted that our academic community impressed Esa with a vision of what a small, fast science mission can offer.

“In 1986 the UK-led mission to Halley’s Comet became the first to observe a cometary nucleus and, more recently, UK scientists took part in another iconic European comet mission, Rosetta. Now our scientists will build on that impressive legacy by attempting to visit a pristine comet for the very first time and learn more about the origins of our Solar System.”

Asteroid 2019 LC1 approaches towards Earth: ReportBy: News Nation Bureau
Last Updated: Thursday, 20 June 2019 12:10 AM

New Delhi:
The gigantic asteroid named as ‘2019 LC1’ will brush past the Earth soon, according to the data gathered by NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). It is to be noted that the asteroid is as big as the Chicago Water Tower.

The data collected by CNEOS says that 2019 LC1 is currently travelling at a speed of 22,100 miles per hour. “It has a diameter of 141 feet and is expected to reach its closest distance from Earth on June 19 at 9:45 a.m. ST,” said CNEOS. Once 2019 LC1 makes its approach, NASA estimated that the asteroid will be about 0.04848 astronomical units or around 4.5 million miles away from the planet’s centre.

“Near-Earth objects are asteroids and other space rocks that typically orbit the Sun. From time to time, the trajectory paths of these asteroids would change, which could bring them closer to the planet,” explains NASA.

In a statement, NASA said, “As they orbit the Sun, [near-Earth objects] can occasionally approach Earth.” “Note that a ‘close’ passage astronomically can be very far away in human terms: millions or even tens of millions of kilometres,” the American space agency added.

Importantly, NASA had first detected that the asteroid is on a near-collision course with Earth on May 30.

On December 18 last year, a large meteoroid was exploded over the Bering Sea, however, it went unnoticed due to the remote location. According to the NASA, the explosion of meteoroid unleashed around 173 kilotons of energy, more than 10 times that of the atomic bomb blast over Hiroshima in World War II. Also, it was the most powerful explosion in the atmosphere since the fireball that burst over the Russian town of Chelyabinsk in 2013. That was 440 kilotons and left 1,500 people injured, mostly from glass flying out of smashed windows.
